We are planning a visit to new Zealand in december of this year (part of an around the world trip). We intend to explore some new destinations, among them is (perhaps) Great barrier Island.
Check out the Best Westerns. Australia and New Zealand had lodging guides available for free in all the motels, B&B's and campgrounds when we were there a few years ago. You can probably get them at the TI's too. The Best Westerns over there all have kitchenette and usually a good hot breakfast. The ones at Rotoarua and Lake Taupo had good sized hot tubs right in the room too. Or, you might want to consider staying in the campgrounds. They have prefab houses or trailers available for rent in the campgrounds that are very inexpensive and the ones we stayed in were really nice. For the GBR we got better rates in a beach community north of Cairns, Australia. Take a look at our Australia pages. Of course, there are always hostels too!
Thanks for your comment on my GT Barrier Island page - I will email you with some more detailed Gt Barrier info later. I really do recommend it as an off the beaten path destination. It's one of those places that many New Zealanders don't even get to visit!
