Addis Ababa Health precautions in Addis
Posted: Mon January 31, 2005 01:51 AM UTC
I'm going to be visiting Addis for a week in March or April. Just wondering (especially from someone medical) what health issues I should get vaccinated for.

I have had yellow fever, Hep B, and tetanus shots.

Also, I would guess (but please verify) that malaria is not much of a risk at that altitude?

Thanks!

Hi there!
Although there is a high risc of Malaria in Etiopia, Addis Abbeba and areas higher than 2200 m.ü.m are practically free of Malaria. So you just have to protect against being bitten by Mosquitoes and if you stay in the town, you don't need to take the Malaria prophylaxis.
As for the vaccinations:
Yellow fever is obligatory (good that you already have it).
The following vaccinations are advised for everybody: Diptherie, Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Poliomyelitis, (Measels).
Hope this helps!

Sorry but I have to correct the first answer you get :
THERE IS NO OBLIGATORY VACCINATION FOR ETHIOPIA.
I spend there about one month, twice a year, since 6 years.
Tetanus shot is always and evrywhere a good thing.
No risk about malaria IF YOU STAY IN ADDIS

Dear Ron,
special vaccination is not supposed to be needed if you are planning to go to Ethiopia. This is a quite new change though. The obligatory measurements (at least for those that were travelling to Ethiopia from Greece) were Yellow fever, hypatitis b and malaria. There are still some people that get this vaccination even though it is not obligatory but suggested only. If you are planning to travel outside Addis, I' d suggest you have the malaria vaccine at least, because there are too many mosquitos in some places, especially close to rivers and lakes.
Have a nice and safe trip there. Enjoy the difference of the place.
Take care,

T.
