You need to get to Naples first. It's not far from there.

CAN I GET A TRAIN DIRECT TO NAPLES FROM ROME? AND WOULD IT BE WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE FROM THE NAPLES TRAIN STATION?

Yes, and it's a lovely train ride too. You'll need to get a bus then from Naples.

From Naples you need to take a train. Pompei and Vesuvius are on the same rail line, from Naples to Sorrento and beyond.
In Italy they call it Erculano.

Once on the Circumvesuvio train, be sure to get off at Ercalano Scavi, not Ercolano. The former is the archeological site, the latter is the 'modern' village.
