I really don't know if there are any back roads, but I don't think I would use them if they existed. The Grand Canyon is far from everyplace, and even the drive in on the established highway is a long, fairly lonely one as I remember.

And the answers are no, no, and no.

You CAN drive to what is called the 'West Rim" of the Grand Canyon by paying to drive on the Hualapai Reservation. But why bother? You won't save any time or money, and the view from this area pales in comparision to what you see in the National Park area.

I agree - there is not a lot out there and I know when you look at the map it appears like there are towns and roads, but they are not what you are thinking.

Really the only way to get there from Vegas is to come down to 40 - you could take the scenic Rt 66 before getting on 64 up to the Grand Canyon - Plus outside of 40 parts of Rt 66 and most of 64 will go thru the desolation you might be looking for. There is not much from 40 to the Grand Canyon - one idea.....it's a pretty drive from the grand canyon to Lake Powell...

Plus the desert climate can be unpredictable - Hot and Cold

Also Native Land is Federal Property - each Reservation devises it's own rules and regulations. Sometimes strict and sometimes not. Tresspassing or entering without permission could be considered a Federal Offense and very bad in some places. In other places it may simply be the roads are not maintained (washed out or duned over) and in even other places the reservations charge a "toll."
