| Northumberland | Holy Island Posted: Fri January 28, 2005 10:24 PM UTC
I will be staying south of Edinburgh this summer and was thinking about taking a drive to Holy Island. Is it worth seeing? Thanks for any help.

We went over 3 years ago. It was well worth it. The village centre has gift shops that actually sell worthwhile souveniers and some nice eating places. We did find you could not eat though between the lunch time closure and the evening meal start up time.
The castle is worth a visit but a steep climb. One of the best places I have ever been.

If you are going to Holy Island, be very aware of the time that it is high tide. My boyfriend and his friends had to swim back from Holy Island back to their car as they were not aware that the high tide completely covers the path back to the mainland.

I went to Holy Island last week. As mentioned check you tide times and dont be tempted to walk over as the town is a fair way away. I think the castle is not open on a monday but you can get the number on line to ring and check.
The Priory and Castle are good to see but also take a bit of time to walk along the coast at the back of the castle and search for fossils in the stones on the beach, we found loads. Also a must is the winery so take a few quid for the Lindisfarne mead and wines, totally lush mmmmh !

You will REALLY enjoy the Island, but as an alternative, if the tides are against you, travel a little further South to Bamborough Castle, which is majestic, or Seahouses and get a boat out to the Farnes Islands to look at the seals, bird life and if your lucky even spot some dolphins and whales,
have a great trip Martin M
