| La Spezia | La Spezia Posted: Mon February 17, 2003 10:33 PM UTC
My family came from Termo de la Spezia, I would love to go there on a vacation. The pictures on your site are more than beautiful. Can you tell me more about the area?

La Spezia itself is a dead ordinary but nice enough town, a military port and convenient base for exploring Liguria. It's located just south of the Cinque Terre (5 minutes by train) and not so far from Pisa,Genoa, and points in Tuscany. The mountains of the region erupt steeply from the sea so beaches are small and cramped, but hiking in the surrounding hills is wonderful. The area is known for Pesto, flower cultivation and somewhat past it resorts. What else do you want to know?

Thank you for answering me. Is La Spezia close to Tuscany and Florence? Is it expensive? Are the hotels nice? My sister and I want to plan a trip. HELP!!!

No, it's not expensive (comparatively). Hotels range from dingy to luxurious, but prices are much lower than in the more glamorous towns on the Riviera like Portovenere. Pisa, on the Tuscan coast, is roughly an hour to the south by train, and Florence is a change of train and one hour journey from there.
The chief advantages of La Spezia are it's proximity to the Cinque Terre, the availability of accommodation, and it's easy rail connections to everywhere else.. Otherwise it's nothing special, although it does have an excellent art museum, a flea market that operates along the waterfront, and a pleasant easygoing atmosphere.
