hiking in Aspen
Posted: Mon February 17, 2003 05:08 PM UTC
I will be in Aspen in late May, 2003 and I'm planning a half day hike to either Cathedral Lake or American Lake. Has anyone been on either of these hikes and, if so, can you give me your thoughts? Thanks so much. Also, I was told that its a 4 hour drive from Aspen to Crested Butte. Is this true?

We were trying to take a short cut from Crested Butte to Aspen before dusk, with limited time and no direct paved route, we're told to take the treated gravel mt. road, quite scenic, lots of flowers and animals, but what they forgot to tell us was it's long, twisty, narrow, single laned, our 4WD SUV almost slide off down the hill, we basically slowed to a crawl, due to the loose gravel and occasional ON COMING TRAFFIC, we were just thankful we made it to the Hwy right before dusk, after the exciting and exhausting drive, we were too tired and lost to drive to Aspen.

If you hike at right hrs, early morning and close to dusk, you will see the nature at it' s best, but no short direct paved route in between the two beautiful cities.

Have fun!

that answers my question about the direct route. I think I'll be sticking to the highways. Thanks!!

Thanks Rosalyn sweetie for the kind words. I have not hiked much in the Collegiate Range area that you mentioned but some words of advice for hiking in the Rockies. Do go early as thunderstorm danger rises the longer you go into the day. Know what to do in the case you encounter a bear. I have once before and I've posted some advice on a Colorado travelogue. Are you hiking alone or with a partner? Email me with questions if you like and I'll help out the best I can.

Give yourself more than a half day for either one of these hikes as they are both beautiful, and I think you would probably like to spend some more time there. But also consider that the elevation is quite high, and both lakes may be inaccessable in May, depending on how much snow we get until then. If you cannot access them, I have many other hike suggestions in the Aspen area. Also, if you want to know how the conditions are in may, feel free to get in touch. i may actually be in aspen at that time.
If I remember properly, from Aspen to Crested Butte is about 5 hours.

If you are in that area and time will let you go down to Ouray. It is a great little town with hot springs and a lot of short hikes. There may also be some of the ice park left, a must see!
