Kotor Would you recommend Montenegro as a holiday destination?
Posted: Tue January 25, 2005 10:16 PM UTC
My wife and I are thinking of travelling to Montenegro for 2 weeks later in June 05. Please can you give us an insight into the place and the people, safety, food, service, value for money, cleanliness, etc.

We have travelled to Dubrovnik in the past and have found it to be a beautiful holiday location.

We are looking at staying on the outskirts of Kotor or near Budva. Can anyone advise us regarding the following hotels;

Hotel Splendido, near Kotor

Hotel Sveti Stefan, 8km from Budva

Many Thanks for your replies!

Hi Conor,
You should not miss the opportunity to travel through Montenegro once you are there. Its scenery is very dramatic:its not only the seaside, its actually mountains, rivers and lakes that make Montenegro a great place to visit.
Don't know about the hotel Splendido.Re people, still majority op people are native countrymen rather than foreigh tourists, although there are more and more of people from abroad visiting the place.Ex Yug together with Montenegro was one of leading tourist destinations by the end of 1980.After that the country was in isolation and there was no much money for maintaining the infrastructure.
Today Montenegro is trying to find its way on the tourist map,but there are still lots of things to be done. But,for sure this country is the top tourist destination thanks to its natural beauty.
Hope you get value for money, they use euro but its still much cheaper than in EU countries.
Please visit www.visitmontenegro.com
www.montenegrosmiles.com
It will give you lots of information.
And if you decide to go there don't miss Durmitor National Park and Tara Canyon! That's north of Montenegro and about 3 hrs drive from the coast through some of the most wonderful scenery in Europe and World. On clear day visit Lovcen, and have dinner at Skadarsko lake.If you go to Durmitor there is longer option of travelling through Moraca Canyon and then Tara Canyon, but make sure you start early trip so you can see the part through Tara Canyon.Stop at the bridge for a break and then carry on up the mountain that will take you to Zabljak.
Stay there at least 3 days:rocky mountains, lots of lakes, some nice acomodation. The air will do you good and there are so many things to do:walking, rafting (dangerous!),climbing,skiing!-even during the summer there are places where snow never melts (local people will tell you). The local food is must to sample. My husband who is from the UK loves the place and can't wait to go and meet the inlaws!Thinking of opening B&B in the future.
For Durmitor, apart from previous sites must visit www.durmitorcg.com
It has lots of information about the place, activities and accomodation, together with picture galeries of Durmitor and river Tara.
See "Crna Gora Galerija" on the right hand side.Right now there is few meters of snow there, but its even better during the summer. The price of the room is about 20-25 euro, there is cheaper option.
Have a nice holiday.

I would definately recommend Montenegro, it is a really beautiful Country and is so full of contrasts, the coast, mountains and lakes are all worth a visit, please don't just stay on the coast, otherwise you will miss so much.

Regarding hotels, the Hotel Splendido is very nice, if you want a 4-star hotel, with 4-star prices. For a nice, more traditional hotel try the Hotel Bokeljski Dvori, which is directly opposite, it has much more character and the people are very nice and welcoming. These hotels are in Prcanj though which is about 4km from Kotor old town. For a really nice hotel nearer to Kotor, try the Hotel Panonija in Dobrota, which is the next place along the bay from Kotor old town. It is a small and friendly hotel just up the hill a few yards from the bay, the rooms are nice and are a good size. They offer bed and breakfast or room only and it is much quieter than Prcanj or Kotor old town.

The hotel Sveti Stefan is unique. It is very nice, but it is a bit tired these days and does not have the high standards it perhaps once had. To be honest, you might be better off staying in the village of Sveti Stefan, which is on the hillside opposite the island. There are several Villas there with lovely rooms, and they have a better view than the rooms on the island. Hotel Kraljicina Plaza (Queens Beach)in Milocer is a very nice small hotel and has an indoor swimming pool, and also the more expensive Hotel Maestral in Przno, which is an excellent hotel and has a lot of facilities.

Regards, Sandy

Hi, we are thinking of going to Montenegro this year, in July. I have just read your posting from last year and I wonder if you did in fact make the trip?
If so, was it a great trip and where did you stay - we have also been looking at the Splendido.
We would be grateful for any info you can provide. Like you, I have also been to Dubrovnik - a wonderful place - and I am hoping Montenegro will be just as beautiful.
