Pataca is the official currency in Macau but Hong Kong currency is commonly used in transactions, especially in tourist areas.

Patacas are the official currency, but seem to be interchangable with HK$ pretty much everywhere. ATMs will even ask you if you want your cash withdrawl in Patacas or HK$. Just make sure that you don't leave Macao with too much Pataca because it cannot be used in Hong Kong.

It is best to have patacas, esp on coins and small denomination, as most of the bus there requires exact patacas for payment.
