I plan to visit this area in July or Aug. How long before a travel date do I need to reserve a space for two adult AND and car on the Alaska Ferry System?

I can't really speak for Ketchikan, as I used a plane to travel there. However, I did take the ferry from Sitka to Juneau and back, and I didn't need reservations. I didn't have a car though: still, I think you don't need to book weeks in advance, a few days might well be enough. Why don't you try asking the Alaska Marine Highway people. I'm sure they have an e-mail address for questions.

If you plan to take the ferry from Bellingham you should book NOW. This fills up very early.
