Jungle

I have started to do my research on Peru and surrounding countries. I have noticed that most travel guides etc mention Iquito to do the Jungle trip.
Is this the best place, or are there others that aren't advertised as much.

Thanks for your help
Anne

I have been to Iquitos and did enjoy it a lot. It's quite a large city ( over 400 000 ) with interesting architecture, especially many houses covered with ceramic tiles brought from Portugal at the times of the rubber boom. The population is quite different to the quechuas you will meet in the Andes area.
But do not hope of pristine virgin forest. With such a large population, people have to find a way to earn a living. Still, the Amazonia river is there and I saw pink dolphin, caďman, piranhas, macao, etc. And also larges trees in this "low Amazonian area" ( in rain season, large area are partly flooded...)
The tourist information center at the Plaza de armas was very helpfull and can recommend tour operator. It's better to check, since some may not be reliable. According to the LP travel guide, I did search the british embassy... which was a bar... I wonder how drunk the writer was...
But there is an other forest location you can visit : the Manu biosphere reserve, north-east of Cuzco. I have not been there, but it looks pretty interesting. It's also easier to reach.
Anyway, you have to visit Cuzco, the nostril of the World !
Happy travel !
Yvon, LeD
