bernard you were only about five when the world faced the cuban missile crisis. russia made a deal with castro to put ICBM s in cuba, 90 miles from the coast of florida. i think that you can see why Kennedy and the rest of the usa had problems with this.

anja i dont understand what you mean by illegal travel through canada and cancun. i was just wondering if you mixed up your words and meant legal travel through canada and cancun.

Barnard...

>..It is ilegle for a US citizen to go to Cuba via any route without a exemption. You would have to apply to one of the US departments....<

It is ilegle to go to Cuba for a US citizen...it's not alowed to spend money on or in Cuba, weird situation, stuburn governments and the most rediculous....The Cuban exiles in Miami are feeding this embargo, so that their own people live a lousy life, a discussion which only will end after the death of a beard.

yeah with America it's either their way or no way. As long as Castro is there and he continues to do what he wants, America and Cuba will never have relations. Castro had a good plan and his plan would still probably work, but with the downfall of the Soviet and the embargoes that America puts on Cuba his plan of course cannot work. They just simply do not have the resources.

America is quite a hypocritical country in many of the things that they do. They can get away with things that others can't and when others try to do the things that they do it means war to them. With Cuba I think it's all about power. If America can't have it no one can. They don't worry about Cuba, because the gov't can still do whatever it is that they want to do down there (ex. Guantanamo Bay). As long as they can keep Cuba as a country that people just want to visit, America feels that they have nothing to worry about.

dont forget also that castro stole a lot of cuban land owned by americans (including the businesses), the americans have never been able to forgive this because of who owned the land. the rich americans that owned the land in cuba were also the same people that lined the back pockets of american poloticians who were in a position to make laws such as the embargos that still exist until today

...and were also the "friends" of Batista who was a dictator who ruled Cuba by letting in all kind of mafia and shot inocent people and hang them upsidedown on trees in Habana city, to give you just one example...so who was wrong and who was right???....dificult question.

But one thing is for sure...
Why do the real Cuban people have to suffer for all this history?...because they are the only one who suffer the most!

WOW!! I'm pleasantly surprised to hear such a moderate and enlightened political discussion from some Cuban Americans. Usually things seem to get bogged down in emotions. Nice to have read this discussion. Buenas suerte!

Firstly, Castro did not steal American land, he reclaimed Cuban land - I know theres a wider picture but thats the basic fact
And on the masses speaking out and getting jailed - just because other countries, such as America control the masses using very sly tactics, it doesnt make it any better! I was in New York last summer and I have never read so much *** in all my life in the newspapers!
Maybe Fidel steals money out of Cuba, maybe he doesnt, but ultimately respect to a man, leading a small country, who is prepared to go against the biggest, most power hungry force in the world
