Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Lagos Is true that I should give a $$ dash (gratuity/a tip) when getting through customs?
Posted: Thu January 13, 2005 03:44 AM UTC
Greetings Everyone!

I will be traveling to Lagos, Nigeria next month and had heard that when going through customs that I should give money to the employees who are examining my luggage. If this is true, how much money is appropiate to give to them? Thanks so much your input on this and I look forward to hearing your responses as well as any other advice you can give me about Lagos.

maybe this thing happens in Lagos and elsewhere... but I would rather not go than give any official money as a tip for doing his job.
I don't think anyone should encourage such behaviour, even if it makes life easier.

Only if they have guns and are pointing them in your specific direction. Giving the Customs officers money only makes it harder for the rest of us to get through without problems. My only problem thus far has been when EXITING Nigeria, because they have been less successful at bullying people who are entering. Exiting people have more of a motivation to leave on time...
