Wadi Musa Travel between Wadi Musa, Jordon and Damascus, Syria
Posted: Thu January 13, 2005 12:09 AM UTC
I have a three day holiday from my archaeological assignment located at Petra, Jordon, which is near Wadi Musa. For this holiday, I am interested in getting to Damascus, Syria. I thought going by train would be a great way of seeing the landscape. Has anyone done this? How long is the trip? Would it be worth my while to train to Syria and fly back to Amman and make my way to Wadi Musa again?

Train would have been a safe bet... if there was one!!
Your best bet is to go to Amman either by bus or service taxi.
If you want to see nice landscape, take the King's highway instead of the desert highway (faster) but for that, you'll probably have to take a regular taxi...
That would take 2-3h via Desert Highway.
From Amman, if you really wish to do so, you could take the train to Damas, but it is an historic train, it takes 8h and I think only leave on monday...
Much better would be to take a bus or service taxi (about 4h).
Not too sure how that would work for you, but you would probably need a Syrian visa as well...
Now, for only 3 days, it sounds like a lot of trouble (well, you'd travel 2 days and have 1 day on-site). Why don't you simply tour the other spots of Jordan? Wadi-Rum, Kerak, Madaba, Jarash,...

Agreed that 3 days may not be possible for you to apapreciate the beauty of Syria/Dama. It taskes at least 3-4 hours by taxia from Petra to Amman and then another 4 hours bus from Amman to Dama. When I was there in Nov 2004, I travelled by bus at 7am from Aqaba, the south point of Jordan to Amman and then changed another bus at 3pm from Amman to Dama. by the time I arrived it was 8pm. What about your way back??

Simply spend some time to explore the beautiful nature of Jordan may be more worthwhile. You can easily spend a couple of days in wadi Rum which is about 2 hours from Petra. Notwithstanding, flying is another matter and I have no idea of the flight schedule.

You can

Cheers.
