do I need a rental car

I will be in Istanbul at the end of January for a week with my girl friend who lives in Turkey. Do I need a rental car ...I am looking at staying at the Best Western
Presdent Hotel any coments..I would like to surprise her with some romantic dinners and places to see

A car's not really needed, metered taxis are cheap and the bus system is very efficient throughout the country. Thelong-distance buses are very comfortable with on-board attendants and A/C. Domestic airfare is also very inexpensive.

Actually I would go so far as to recommend that you through that crazy idea of renting a car in Istanbul out the window. Traffic in Istanbul is chaotic. Driving around in it will only drive you mad. I know the location of the Best Western President Hotel and it is close to public transportation and the major attractions of Istanbul.

I'm agree... Driving car in İstanbul is very stressful and difficult, especially foreigners. best way is cheap taxi. As far as I know your hotel must be near the tram line which goes to sultanahmet and eminönü. (touristic and historical places) You can have a romantic meal side by the Bosphorus...

Driving back home ( Turkey ) i crazy, dude don't rent a car... Just walk or take bus/taxi. If your girlfriend lives in Istanbul, she should know about the traffic jam.
I don't know about the hotel you talking about. Sorry...

Almost everyone drives like a maniac, the pedestrians have no right of way, liberal use of car horn and in Sultanahmet's cobbled winding roads, you'll be amazed at their ability to squeeze past each other in opposite directions at mere inches apart at high speed. The idea of a tourist driving in Istanbul is almost hilarious. Just stick to the fairly cheap taxis, just don't get ripped off.
