Romania to Kosice (SK) by public transport...?

Hi all

I'm not having much luck on Google with working out how easy this would be - ideally I'd like to leave from the north/east of Romania and cross over the east of Hungary rather than passing through Budapest as that'll extend the travelling time quite a lot. I assume travelling via the Ukraine means you need a transit visa? so if anyone has any idea of any buses that can take me to Kosice without too much detour or hassle it would be really appreciated - many thanks!

You can cross the RO/HU border - you take the train to Satu Mare and from there you take a bus/ taxi to the border, you cross the border and you can go to Nyiregyhaza, Debrecen or Tokaj. Just I recommend you check the train connections (there are not too many) - for Romanian Railways see www.cfr.ro, for Hungarian schedule see www.elvira.hu, in case these don't work properly try the German www.bahn.de, it usually works pretty good.
Then you can go to Kosice eg. through the HU/SK crossing in Satoraljaujhely, but I am not sure about its status, I mean there are 2 crossings in that town, one is in the center and the other one outside the town, like 2 hours walk from the train station ;) last year I used the crossing in the town and had no problems with it - and it is a convenient place because just after the crossing point you have a train station from where you can take a train to Kosice ;)

That is really helpful advice - thankyou very much! Looks like we'll just get the train from Sighisoara for a 13.5 hour train ride as it's the least hassle - should be scenic enough to pass the time! Thanks again :-)
