Sidewalk cafes
Posted: Sun January 2, 2005 02:12 PM UTC
Hello,

I'm looking forward to a trip to Venice, and I'm especially interested in the sidewalk cafes on the square. How often do strolling orchestras play in this area? Is it in the evening only or also during lunchtime/afternoon?

Any recommendations on the best cafes that don't totally rip you off? :)

Thanks!
Tara

Hi Tara,

The orchestras don't actually stroll in St. Mark's. They, three or more of them, have fixed locations in front of some very famous restaurants. Basically, there is at least one of them playing all the time it seems.

But be prepared. This is one of those things that you have to be willing to pay for just for the experience. We were just there in October and felt the need one morning. So, two capuchinos and two brioche cost us 30 euro. We forgot about the cost and enjoyed the moment and the music.

Whoa, 30 Euro? Guess it's better to be prepared. You're right, it's ridiculous, but I don't think I could go to Venice and not do it, so I guess I'll consider it the cost of refreshment AND a concert. :)

Thanks for the info!
