My family and I were in Belize for 8 days this past June, but we spent no time in Belize City--expect to fly in and out of Ambergris Caye.

The city itself looked pretty grungy. I'd probably try to get out of BC for somewhere else depending on how much shore leave you have.

I know that when we were at Xunantunich near the Guatemalan border we saw groups from cruise ships.
So if you want to see some ruins, I would suggest that; or I heard that Altun Ha or Lamanai are also nice (but smaller).

The beach at Ambergris Caye was minimal, and we were at a place where you were supposed to be a guest to enjoy it. So unfortunately I'm not much help here. Also, Belize and the Cayes are behind a really long barrier reef, so there were no waves.
This combination made it great for snorkeling.

Sorry I can't give you any tips on shopping or beaches in BC; but overall, Belize was a fabulous place and we all had a great time. If you have time to research, I'd find out what tours the cruise ship offers and either take one of those; or if they're too expensive, try and replicate one of them on your own. Try belizeforum.com
