We got through briefly to friends at Oonlee Bungalow on Ko Jum this morning (in the northern part of Ko Jum known as Ko Pu) and they are all fine. (We were there just a week ago.) Only their boat was destroyed. Don't know about the other parts of Ko Jum. Trying to reach them by phone again for more details ... will update with any additional info we get ...

| Ko Lanta | (Relatively) Good News from Ko Jum Posted: Tue December 28, 2004 04:53 AM UTC
I reached Ko Jum ton;ight by phone again and spoke to several friends at Oonlee Bungalows, on the northern side of the island (Ko Pu). Good news: only one person is rumored to have died on the island, a local who was on a boat at the time the wave hit. Bad news: all but three bungalow operations have apparently been destroyed. The three that remain are Oonlee, Ting Rai, and Aosi - all on the northern part of the island. Apparently Fubar (a popular watering hole, for those who know it) was swept something like 200 meters. People on the island have limited access to news and information (they didn't understand until 12 hours later what was really going on), and the only Internet cafe is no longer functioning. Apparently it IS possible to leave the island by small boat, but the ferries don't seem to be running right now. Our friends at Oonlee were fine - just running short on ice and fuel for the motos. It was very hard to get through by phone (after 50 or so tries I actually got connected) and they are having difficulty calling out. So there's a good chance your friends are just fine, but simply having trouble reaching you ...

thanks for the info, I've been seeking information about koh jam & golden pearl (who owns fubar) the last couple of days. I'm glad to hear that people seem to be quite ok after all.

Thank you so much for your update. I have been so heartsick? Do you have any information from the other side of the island? I am particularly concerned about the ladies at the Luboa Hut which, in Christmas 2002 was the second bungalow operation on the left if you are walking down the northwest side of the island. (the less developed side)

Is the Onlee Bungalow near the Luboa Hut bungalow operation? I stayed there during the 2002 holiday season and at that time it was the 2nd operation on the left as you walk down the beach. I am very concerned about the wonderful ladies there.
I am so glad your friends are okay.

I'm sorry, I don't have specific information about the bungalow you refer to, although it must be right next to Oonlee. If they were built on a slope they are likely OK. In general, the northern part of the island seems to have been spared significantly due to its rocky shore and Phi Phi absorbing the brunt of the wave that was traveling east.

News on 1/5 from a friend staying on Ko Jum: "I met the British guy and his Irish girlfriend (Richie and Marnie) who own the Fubar. They were working cleaning up the beach there and helping the family who own the Golden Pearl. However, things were going along fairly rapidly and it seemed as though things would fairly quickly be moving to insurance assessments and getting in heavy equipment to clean up the major debris, followed, one hopes, by rebuilding."

Hi,
I was staying at Joys Bungalow when the Tsunami came... Quite heavy damage there, about 12 Bungalows destroyed, restaurant devastated, but nobody died on Koh Jum. After some days of working, reastaurant looks good again. Other places on Koh Jum, as golden pearls or Andaman village, are razed totally. On Jan. 4th, the boats from Karbi still out of service. Krabi is ok, but empty. I stayed at K. Guesthouse, no problems there, but people are in deep dispair. You can go to Joys bungalow in a few weeks, and you should, if you want to help people. Very special experience for me, it helped me a lot in getting over it to assist the people in the clean-up process. Greetings Stepha
