| Jersey | Is It Worthwhile To Hire A Car In Jersey and Parking Problems In St Heiller Posted: Mon December 27, 2004 09:43 AM UTC
Would you recomend I hire a car for a 5 night break in Jersey or am I better to arrive at the airport and just get a taxi to my hotel in St Heiller and use public transport and go on the island full day tour.
Please advise me as this is my first visit and I would like to see the island but would not hire a car unless I was advised to do so. Also what is the parking like in the capital and other villages. How much is a taxi fare to the capital from the Airport. Thanks in advance for any replys |

I can't say about the car. You may have problems parking in the capital, because there are so many cars, but if your hotel has parking facilities when you go to smaller places on the island you should have less problems. Personally I would just go by bus. The island is small enough to be able to see most of the island by bus. As for taxi from the airport to the capital it's £10-£15 depending on traffic and location I would say.

Definitely hire a car. You didn't say when you were travelling but the buses are on winter timetable until the end of May and the service island-wide is pretty awful. Car hire is really cheap and parking in St. Helier is absolutely fine - there are plenty of car parks. You won't get access to all the really beautiful parts of the island without a car.
Be careful of some of the quirks of driving on the island - filter in turn is in operation at some junctions: this means exactly what it says. Also, many of the roads have 15 and 20 mile per hour limits so be careful. Have a wonderful stay here. If you want more information let me know.

Definitely use public transport, there are probably more cars than people in Jersey and its really hard to find a parking place, my friend got a fine during her first car trip in the town, the traffic is terrible especially during rush hours. i prefer using a bus, honestly

Hire car is a must, as public transport is not well thought out, and isn't cheap either.. ie it is cheaper to drive to town from the country parishes and pay the parking for 4 hours than to take the bus!!! Most places worth seeing ie the Zoo or the war tunnels need a car so you take your time to go round them... enjoy your trip
