| Trabzon | i want to stay in village in Rize Posted: Tue December 21, 2004 03:40 PM UTC
Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to stay in a pension or a hotel in beautiful village in Rize.
I saw pictures of it, and fell in love with the beautiful green scenery. Also I love country life and very traditional ways of life. I recently went to the Balkans, and people rented a spare room in their house, does that system work in Turkey? And is it expensive in this area? |

Yes, you can find places in people's homes. They will usually have a sign out that says "pansiyon." These places vary widely. Some are more like small hotels. Others are like what you described: a room in someone's house.
The mountains east of Rize are beautiful. I don't know when you were thinking of going, but winters are rainy on the coast, snowy in the mountains. Many of the mountain villages (called "yayla" in Turkish) are actually summer pasture villages, so they shut down for the winter. So summer would be the best time to visit, I think. Prices are cheaper than most of the more developed areas of Turkey. Some of the more touristy areas like Ayder and Uzungöl are slightly more expensive, but you also have more options to choose from, and you can definitely find a cheap place. Public transportation is hit and miss (except along the coast). I love the eastern Black Sea. It is very beautiful. If you want to check out a super book to give you travel ideas, try to find Black Sea by Sevan and Müjde Nisanyan. I haven't seen a better guide to the villages and out-of-the-way places along the Black Sea coast. Their website lists recommended small hotels, but many are not in the budget category. www.nisyanyan.net Have fun!
