For one thing, the official name is Bad Aachen. City of many warm water wells. The problem is they are a bit smelly.

Visit the cathedral and the old town center.

Have a look at: http://www.aachen.de/DE/tourismus_stadtinfo/aktuell/index.html

It's in German, but you get an impression.

PS at my Aachen intro page you'll find a map of the inner city.

Aachen Cathedral is, arguably, one of the most interesting and historically important in Europe. Founded by Charlemagne in the late 700s, it was an important centre of the Holy Roman Empire for 600 years. It is architecturally fascinating - being composed of three stylistically distinct sections - and you can even see Charlemagne's throne (alegedly). It was one of the first buildings to be inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1978. Really, really worth seeing.

Also, as already noted, Aachen is a spa town, and has lots of springs and fountains all around the city centre, and these often incorporate interesting sculptures and statues.

Enjoy your trip.

Regards

Andrew

As above, the cathedral is a highly important site. It's built around the palace chapel of Charlemagne and is the probably finest piece of barbarian romanesque architecture in western Europe.

The cathedral is one of my absolute favourite cathedrals with its oriental look! Next to it is the treasury where you can see Charlemagne's ar bones (supposedly...) in a gold arm and other historic art.

The old City Hall is also worth a visit with its historic wooden meeting halls.

Danielle,

The Christmas market will offer food too!
Have a look at my T-logues and you will see some of the food goodies Aachen has to offer.
