I'm from Auckland so maybe not the best person to take advice from. Courtney place is where it all seems to happen in Wellington. One of my favourites is this funky little bar called Milk. Also Bar Bidago (not sure of the spelling) I can't tell you where exactly that one is, which in my book is a pretty good sign (not Courtney palce). But it might be worth looking up in the phone book when you arrive, it's got a weird kind of crowd and seems to be busy even on school nights so could be a good option for a Monday or Tuesday.

Hey! I'm from Wellington [but living in palmerston North now....] and it all depends what you're looking for. There are heaps of different places you can go to, it just depends what kind of thing you're into. But the above poster is very correct, Courtenay Place is the street where it all happens! If that fails, try going for a walk up Cuba St, you may find something you like up there. Have fun in Wellington!

I think the guy aove means Bar Bodega.
My pick of live music venues and bars: San Fransisco Bath House on cuba st – great live music) Might Mighty – relaxed but styley bar Hawthorne – as above Matterhorn (AAA+++!!!) – great food, music, bar. Wellington legend. Sandwhiches – live music but mostly DJ’s Havana Bar – cool, laid back, tucked away place to end your night or morning
