About the only thing you can do

Is park the car yourself. It doesn't cost $34 a day to keep a car in the garage, even in S.F. [probably closer to $33 :^) ], but the extra cost is to pay someone to drive your car to the nearest garage.

When I went to SuperPages.Com and did a search of garages in the 94133 ZIP code, I found three. One of them, the Wharf Garage, is probably where your car will be parked anyway. How much will it cost to park your car youself? I can't say, but I doubt it will be $34. You will have to walk a block or so to your hotel.

Parking is really really hard in SF... I finally found a place that was just 5 $ per night - but that was only until 5 a.m.! After that you had to pay new for the day or be awake in bed and be scared of your car being towed away.
sorry, i don't have any advice for you...

Hi,

You are probably renting a car as I don't suppose you are driving from Norway - LOL. Are you arriving in San Francisco? If so, don't rent a car until you are ready to leave San Francisco. You don't need it in San Francisco.

If you are going to be several days in San Francisco, think about taking the car out to the Airport and parking it in one of the long term lots for $5 per day. Then, take the shuttle to the Airport (free) and ride BART (the subway) back into San Francisco. But, this would probably only be worth it if you are going to stay several night.

By the way, I have stayed at thy Hyatt on the Warf and it is very nice and well situated. If you like to walk, which I do, you can walk from the hotel, right up Powell Street, over Nob Hill, and down to Downtown San Francisco. Extremely interesting walk through some ethnic neighborhoods, and very safe.

I live about 2 hours from San Francisco and never tire of going there to walk....Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello:
When researching for our visit to SF a year ago, I found that nearly all the in-town hotels charge a hefty parking/valet fee -- probably for the reason Jim stated. Parking is scarce in San Francisco. Better take his advice and leave the car at the airport! (Anyway, the city is smaller than you might think, and is quite easy to get around with public transportation).

Well, I kinda changed my mind, that is I found another hotel www.adantehotel.com that was cheaper per night and they only charged 18US per day for parking. So I got a cheaper hotel and cheaper parking, the hotel looks to be ok and well situated. We will be arriving LA and then drive up the coast to SFO and stay for a couple of days.

And no we will not be driving from Norway.....

Hi again,

I am glad you decided not to drive from Oslo. Had a friend from Poland once who tried it and he ended up in China. Made a wrong turn somewhere around Iceland.

Anyway, I am not familiar with the hotel you mentioned. I looked it up on the website. Three blocks on Gery from Union Square is convient. Over the last 10 or15 years, many old hotels that had fallen into complete disrepare and were "flop houses" for homeless people have been cleaned up and made quite nice. I expect this is one of them. I regularly stay at a similiar hotel, just off Geary called the Amsterdam.

They will probably actually have you park in a city garage, but give you the rate they advertised. The Amsterdam, where I stay, charges $10 a night - at least that is what I remember from the last time I was there, but they have their own tiny 10 car parking lot right next door to the hotel, something almost unheard of in San Francisco for that type of hotel.

Be sure you get out and do a lot of walking while you are there. I would suggest walking from your hotel to Fisherman's Warf and then returning by Cable Car. Another great and cheap ride in San Francisco is the "J line" which is only $1 I think. It will take you from Fisherman's warf, through the Embarcadero, up Market and end at the Castro. You really get to see a lot of San Francisco that way. If you take it up to the Castro, it is a long, but interesting walk back through the Height (hippy) area, to where your hotel is.

You are going to love SF.....Oh yes, and don't forget the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Even if you don't care for art, the building is great to see.

Hmm.....could go on, but there is a limit, and I am sure you have some good guide books.

Thank you!
All are good suggestions, I have some good books on both SFO and California.
I will most probabaly visit the old hippy area, and the gayest area in the world, is that not Castro?
I like walking around and getting "lost" a bit, that is when you truly find out what a town is all about.

Well sometimes if I can afford it I stay at nice hotels, and if I have the money to pay a few nights at Hyatt it does not make it OK to pay 34 bucks plus tax to park...

Anyway I have foud a cheaper good placed hotel with cheap parking.

You are right about the hotel. Some places nice hotels are reasonable, such as Thailand or India. Other places, they just cost too much, like San Francisco. Then they rip you off with things like the high cost of parking and room service. Better to stay in a nice, but economical hotel, and use your money to enjoy life when you are awake and can enjoy it!!!
