Hey!
I travelled around brazil solo (and a female) and didnt have any problems really with safety. Just do all the normal things and stay on your toes. One place i recommend staying in Rio is Mario's Hostel, in Copacabana. Thers a web link www.marioshostel.com A really chilled out place. The owner is really informative too.
Also you must visit salvador. People will give you loadsd of recommendations when youre out there anyway.
Enjoy!
xx

Pipa, 40 km south of Natal was a place like that. It starts to get to many tourists there now, but you should check it out. I think you will like it. “Praia de Amor” is a must! If you need a “hippy place” to stay in contact me, I know the right place for you!

Then we have Ponta Negra, Natal. Tourist place, but I really like it. If you need a place to stay, contact me. I’ve got allot of connections.

And there is 1000 upon 1000 of km with nearly untouched beaches (Where you can drive buggy if you like)

The next place I wooed recommend is Canoa Qebrada. It’s a small place with a hell of a weekend party. This is 120 km south of Fortaleza. I even have contacts there.

Hey!

I would stay in Ipanema. There is a really cool hostel there called IPANEMA BEACH HOUSE. It's on Rua Barao da Torre, 485. If you go to hostels.com you can look it up. It's in a great location in Ipanema, close to the beach (I think Ipanema is the best!) and close to Ipanema shopping.

You could also stay in Santa Teresa which is totally Bohemian but is kind of far from everything. It's a great area to go up to one day during your trip. You can run into random bands playing and people are super mellow. Plus it's an older section and streets, trolley, and houses are really cool. (I also like the bar scene there). Just be careful at night (as you should anywhere).

You should go to Ilhe Grande. It's a really cool island where you can either camp or stay in a hostel. The beaches are amazing and the atmosphere is SUPER relaxed. It's really tiny and very cool to visit.
