A Week With the Family - Keep Everyone Happy
Posted: Fri December 10, 2004 02:41 AM UTC
I am part of the new phenomonen in travel, older travelers taking their family with them on a vacation. There are six of us, early twenties for four and mid 50's for us parents. The forum has been very helpful for things to do, I have a full page of ideas and can see already we will have no trouble keeping busy.

We are planning a weeks stay at Easter and I need help determining a place and area to stay. Because of our size and cost of feeding we need a place with a kitchen. We will rent a van so travel will not be an issue but will use public transport when convenient.

We are not a real party crowd, actually pretty athletic, two marathoners and a triathlete and long distance cyclist in the crowd. We do however need things to do at night and l am looking for ideas of where to look. So far it seems Downtown, Harbor Island, Coronodo and LaJolla are possiblities.

Does this fit with your perceptions for a good location? Now what? Beachfront is nice but not really necessary that time of year but being close to things is probably more important. How do I go about finding a rental? Do I use an agent? I see mention of suite motels but I think we are in the two room category and will find a rental unit more comfortable and probably less expensive.

Hi,

You could try http://www.craigslist.com or http://www.oakwood.com to look for accommodations.

We didn't stay there, but have heard wonderful things abou Old Town Cottages. They are centrally located and close by the Trolley Line so you can get around fairly easily. They look very nice, with little kitchenettes, and great Southwest decor. Just google Old Town Cottages San Diego for tons of booking sites.

San Diego is wonderful - enjoy!

at that oakwood website there is one listed on regents road. this is a pretty good location. easy access to two freeways. there are several restaurants within a mile and there is a large mall close by. it would be about a 10 minute drive to the downtown of la jolla, 15-20 minutes to pacific/mission beach area - about the same to the zoo area. it is a residential/business area.
for condos on a beach, do a search for mission bay rentals - they have plenty. make sure the rental includes a parking space.

If you are not a real party crowd, but athletic, then Downtown, Harbor Island, Coronodo and LaJolla are not a good location? Beachfront, Mission Bay and Valley are nice this time of year, being close to things is probably not important, you could stay in Chula Vista, Normal Hights, etc.

"How do I go about finding a rental?" That's the BIG question for people living here - everybody wants to be here, thats why housing prices are sooooo high!!!!

Please don't stay in Old Town...don't even go to that phony little tourist trap off the freeway dump.
You sound like people who would like Pacific Beach. Miles of beach with boardwalk for running, biking, skating. A pier, jillions of restaurants, a roller coaster and huge indoor pool. Near Sea World, near La Jolla.
http://www.crystalpier.com/ is literally right over the waves, a unique and memorable place to stay.
http://www.catamaranresort.com is a big place a block off the beach but right on the calm waters of the Bay
Both surrounded by dining, partiy spots, and the general beach culture

I agree, Old Town Cottages would fit the bill. They are small and you may need to add a roll-a-way or two because the bed in the bedroom is a queen and the couch makes up into queen size, which might not be enough. They have a little, fully equipt kitchen and an outdoor grill in your own private patio or garden area.

However, the value of the location is also in the fact that it is centerally located, just south of the main drag of Old Town and Old Town State Park. The Cottages are within walking distance but on a side street so the noise and activity of the area would not disturb your rest. It is also two blocks from the I-5 freeway making it easy to get where you'd like to go. The Trolley station in Old Town, which is a transfer station for buses also, is a few blocks away.

Hope this helps,
Linda

Old town is a bunch of little shops and tourist traps. It is of fairly recent construction, not really historically interesting. What history there is, is pretty drab and unlikely to interest an active family. I do not understand why people go there, much less suggest that others do. The "main drag" is a bunch of chain hotels and chrome/glass tourist watering holes.
San Diego is pretty much about beaches. Ocean Beach is a highly unique community with a very unique pattern of beaches from the tidepools or the Cliffs, to the pier and main surfing beach to the river inlet of Dog Beach. It has lots of much more interesting stores and bars where some very colorful locals hang out.
Pacific Beach has miles of walkway, doubling back onto the bay. It is sprinkled with boat rental, bike rental, skate rental, a wonderful indoor pool, volleyball courts that have produced Olympic champions and top pros...a short scenic drive, on a bus route leads to La Jolla, an art community with breathtaking waterfront, from the Cove to the seal community at Children's beach, with the Comtemporary Art Museum and galleries thrown in.
Pacific Beach is LINED with cottages, motels, hotels, etc. check websites. Or, think about the links I posted above for something out of the ordinary grind. You don't have to be tourist fodder, that's what sites like this are all about, the ability to find out something from locals.

Well, each to his/her own, but I thoroughly enjoyed Old Town. We were only able to spend a couple of hours there, as we had places to go, but wished we had more time to explore the shops and buildings.

Not a problem: you can find those same shops in similar prefab tourista ghettos all over the world.
