Grand Canyon National Park Hotel in Grand Canyon
Posted: Thu December 9, 2004 10:16 AM UTC
Hello there.

We are travelling to California and Arizona for our honeymoon next June and wanted to know if anybody could recommend an out-of-the-way, romantic, away from the crowds, hotel, that is located within the Grand Canyon National Park, and that is within walking distance to one of the look out points for the Canyon, and close to trails for hiking etc.

We would very much appreciate your help in making this trip the holiday of a lifetime for us. Thanks and Regards,

Rachel and Brian

Grand Canyon National Park The place you specify simply does not exist

The phrases "away from the crowds hotel" and "within the Grand Canyon National Park" can not be combined in a logical sentence. As noted above, all Canyon lodging is run by Xanterra.Com; and all of their places on the South Rim are within Grand Canyon Village -- the most crowded part of the park. Even the hotels in Tusayan are designed for quick visits to the Canyon, not for romantic times.

The BEST possible combination might be Grand Canyon Lodge on the NORTH Rim. This area is much less crowded, cooler, and more arboreal than the South Rim, but the overlooks are less spectacular. Overlooks and trails are somewhat close to the hotel. It might meet your needs quite well, although it's not exactly what you're looking for.

Hi,

All of the accommodations within Grand Canyon Nat'l Park are administered by their concessionaire Xanterra. You can check out Xanterra's website for individual hotels in Grand Canyon Nat'l Park.

On the South Rim, the closest hotels to the rim are Bright Angel Lodge & Cabins and El Tovar Hotel (within steps). The next closest hotel to the rim is Maswik Lodge which is about 1/4-1/2 mile from the rim. El Tovar is the grandest hotel in Grand Canyon and by grandest I mean it's built during the era of huge, log western national park hotels, in the same class as the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone.

I don't know if your trip will include the North Rim. If so, there is the one and only Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim perched above the ravine, also administered by Xanterra. It also has cabins available. This is probably the most romantic of all because the N. Rim is farther away at a higher elevation and receives less visitors than the S. Rim. Additionally there is Jacob Lake Inn and Kaibab Lodge on the Kaibab Plateau en route to the N. Rim.

Good luck.

I would head over to:
http://www.grandcanyonnorthrim.com/dynamic/mz_viewer.htm?articleid=1
& make a reservation for the NORTH RIM LODGE right away. It is everything you are looking for. Try to get one of the cabins with a Canyon view. The North Rim is more isolated than the South Rim & doesn't get the crowds. The drive into the North Rim from Jacob Lake is VERY scenic.
