Hi there,
Arkhangelsk is a port town. Norway or Sweden-like landscapes, wooden churches, in winter sunset is around 5pm. At 6 it's completely dark. Totally different from Italy for sure.
See for some general info:

And that's how it looks in winter

Good luck,
Alex

Hi there,
I live in Moscow, having relatives in A. The last time I saw it was before perestroyka times.
July is a nice month the bloom of quick northern summer. There might be some gnats - especially in the country side. As to languages - for sure lots of young people speak English. The western churches, especially American ones are spreading their wings there, attracting the poor and the young locals. Those are the islands of anglo-saxon culture. So you might look for the A. divisions of some catholic congregations.
Discos and pubs are universal. A. is not an exclusion.
Don't give up Russian. If you can accomplish it - will there be anything too hard for you?
When you are on your 3-d month - come back to me for practising.
Good luck!
Alex
