St Peterburg to Petrozavodsk is about 7 hours, 4 hours per day (one arrives in the afternoon, one in the evening, one past midnight, and one is overnight).

Petrozavodsk to Arkhangel'sk is less trivial. There are no direct trains. The most obvious and the less interesting way is to backtrack to Saint Patarsburg and take a direct train to Arkhangel'sk. There is only one train and it runs 25 hours, arrives in the evening.

If you want smth more adventurous, you can follow North to Belomorsk, catch a bi-daily train direction Vologda, take off at Obozerskaya and take any train to Arkhangel'sk (it is relatively close), This is definitely slowlier and requires a lot of coordination. Even more adventurous is take a boat from Petrozavodsk to Pudozh, a bus to Kargopol, and then another one to Nyandoma and a train to Arkhangel'sk. An advantage is that you pass Kargopol', which is admittedly beautiful (I have personally never been there so far), but is so far off the beaten track that it is very little visited. But these two options requite a lot of time and at least some confidence in Russian.

Hi.

I recently returned from Petrozavodsk.
I Travelled there from St petersburg Pulkova airport. By Overnight train.
The Journey takes 9 hours.
The ticket cost me 300rubles.
The train makes a few stops along the way. so dont be worried.
Getting from St p Airport to Ladozhsky Train Station is the Key.
A Taxi should cost NO MORE than 1000rubles.
So be prepared to haggle.

It Is a GOOD Idea to book your Train ticket well in advance.
Once at the station.
You can ask about trains to your Final destination.
Take Plenty to drink. ( Bottled water) And snacks.

Hope this helps
