| Trier | Traveling to Trier March 03 Posted: Sun February 2, 2003 10:21 PM UTC
i am looking for any helpful information in regards to several things i have not been able to find out about Trier via- the internet. I will be traveling through Germany by car- my main objective of my trip wil to be re-lax and sight-see the outdoors- along with my camera. I am interested to find camera stores in the area- especially where to get film, including medium format film. i am also wondering where abouts i might find a specialty tobacco store in this area. We plan on traveling light and i do know that you can only bring in a certain amount of cigarettes into Germany- and well, i am a smoker and want to be able to know where to purchase American cigarettes when i get there, along with the possibility of imported Indonesian Djarums. i have had no luck searching for tobacco stores in Germany on line- as i am beginning to wonder if there is a special name used for cigarette stores. On another note. i am beginning to become a bit nrevous about the possibility of the German/English language barrier- are there any special travel groups or english speaking guide/help centers? I would appreciate any information or even websites that you may want to pass along or think would be of assistance- or your personal ideas, help and comments. Thanks, Trees

I spent two years in Germany, courtesy of the US Air Force.
You should have no problem finding smokes. Even the smallest villages have vending machines attached to the sides of stores and even homes. The brand may be the same as back home, but the taste will be different and the price a bit higher. As far as cloves...good luck. I can remember being thrown out of discos and bars because the locals thought the funny smell was something much more illegal...quite funny as I remember. About film...I have no idea. Isn't AGFA German? Enjoy your trip. --ksr

thank you so very much... i thought there might be an issue with the cigarettes- and of course i just want to be prepared. i did locate several camera shops- and i don't think i will have a problem with the film issue now- BTW- i have 10 days over there- any suggestions on what to see or do? good food? and what would be a local specialty there that i must try? any info would be great. thanks again.

OK, can I tell only one thing? Germany is the biggest country here in Western Europe, it is the most ‘American’ and actually more free in alcohol & tobacco laws then the US. You can easily travel only with handbag and find all what you need there. Language shouldn’t be too difficult at all, most young people and many older citizens can manage with English.
Just one suggestion: Try not to compare it with the US, no reason to, try to find things that interest you, places, old cities, castles, people, food, drinks etc. Trier is nice old city, beer in Germany is good as you know and Schnitzel is always recommended in countryside restaurants. Have a nice travel.

In the city center of Trier there's a special tobacco store on the Simeonstrasse (one of the main streets in Trier) quite close to the central market. Don't know the number, but it's closed to a bakery shop on the right side coming from the Tourist information centre. This shop is specialized, so you'll find a wide range of cigarettes and brands. For your special films go either to "Saturn" in the Karstadt warehouse on the Simeonstrasse or to "Pro Markt" in the Treveris Passage, a few meters besides.
Hope this special information helps. Just ask in the Tourist information where exactly to find these stores, it's easy to find !
