Bassas da India is a coral atoll situated in the Mozambique Channel midway between Beira and Madagascar. It is approximately 36km in circumference and apart from an old steel wreck has no land protrusion above sea level at high tide. At low tide the water flowing from the lagoon covers the reef to a depth of about 30cm. Consequently there are no inhabitants. The 'territory' is claimed by France as is the nearby Europa Island, which is a nature reserve and has a detachment of French Foreign Legionnaires as the only inhabitants. A number of very old wrecks can be found on and around the atoll and there are rumours of gold treasure. I have been to Bassas and recovered a three hundred year old brass nail as used in the construction of East India cargo trading ships. Craig
