By far the quickest way will be by car. If the weather's not too bad and you have time you can not only visit Gairloch, but also make a real day of it, and cover the applecross Penninsula: there is one marvellous piece of road (if you're not a nervous driver) that takes you through a series of hairpin bends and through the Bealach na Ba.
If you have to do it by public transport, and you opt for the bus to Inverness, you'll probably need to spend the night in Inverness (the schedules aren't very regular). Alternatively you can get the bus to Kyle then the train to Garve then the train from Garve to Ullapool and that will take around 4 hours. If you leave around 10.15, you'll be in Ullapool by just after three in the afternoon.
