Almería New Years in Almeria
Posted: Wed December 1, 2004 03:32 PM UTC
Hi people, I am heading to Almeria some time between 29th Dec and 5th Jan with my boyfriend. I will fly into San Javier near Murcia and rent a car but after that I don't know where to go. I would like somewhere warm (er than Ireland at this time of year), relaxed but at the same time where there are likely to be restaurants open during this period. I am happy to stay in a hotel or apartment. I also speak Spanish so can get around easily enough. Any suggestions? I was thinking of Cabo de Gata, Nijar or San Jose. I like remote places but at the same time would like to be able to eat yummy local food!! I would also like to visit Granada. Do you think it would be possible to drive there from Almeria in a day, or should I book Granada seperately and spend a few days there. Also which would be better for new years? Preguntas preguntas. All suggstions gratefully recieved!!

Hi!

Good choice! Almeria is beautiful, and Granada... well, what can I say?

I did something similar last year. Almeria was very quiet, but there will be small local restaurants open in any village.

The weather in Almeria was sunny and warm (although it was chilly on the beach you could sunbathe by the pool), good for sightseeing.

The drive to Granada was scary. We went via Guadix because I wanted to see the caves. As soon as we started approaching Sierra Nevada there was snow, sleet, drizzle... the lot! Wonderful view though, when you could see anything at all!

Then we went on towards Malaga and the weather was fantastic again. The drive from Granada to Malaga was much easier than Almeria-Granada.

I wouldn't go to Granada as a day trip from Almeria in that weather. Anyway the city is so amazing that you want to spend at least one night there. Granada was very busy on the dates you mention. Make sure you book in advance. We stayed at the hotel "Casa del Capitel Nazari". Beauuuuuutiful, and just by the Alhambra.

Enjoy your trip!
