Well-travelled as I am, I've never visited Basilicata. Shame for an Italian, so I intend to spend next NYE in there with my Finnish girlfriend. Any advice on "hidden" places to see would be dearly appreciated. I speak Italian and will be driving.

Matera is interesting.
You can see the history of housebuilding. On one side of the valley you can see the caves of the pre history as you look more towards the city you will find caves changed to homes and end up with modern appartments. Metaponte (temple near seaside) Ciao Erwin

Hi
stay at wonderful Tenuta Pomponio bed and breafkast near Stigliano, about 40 minutes form Matera. You can make daytrips to Matera, the Jonian coast, Alberobello, and Pietrapertosa (higly recommneded) and the dolomiti lucane area. The bed and breakfast is a 1700 farm house beautifully restored and is a real farm, producing olive oil. Rates are competitive, tennis courts and horses. The owner is Mario and hie German wife Beate.
