Magic Mountain vs Knotts Berry Farm
Posted: Fri November 26, 2004 03:34 AM UTC
We, the grandparents are taking our 9 & 12 yr old grand daughters to either Magic Mtn. or Knott's in Feb 05 for approx 4 days. The girls love wild rides - we all love water rides - which park would you prefer? and why? Would like a suite in a motel/hotel for approx. 125/nite US. Hope you can you help us out with your advice...we will rent a car at the airport. thanks, Karla

Mgc Mtn definitely has the faster, scarier rides...but I think Knott's is a much better-managed park....cleaner, shorter lines, better food etc. Also many more lodging options nearby since it is so close to Disneyland...you could also do a day at Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure Park, or take a trip to the San Diego Wild Animal Park which isn't too long a drive from Knotts.

On Sat & Sun, the traffic is not too bad, you can drive from Knotts to Magic Mountain in about 90 minutes. If your goal is amusement parks, you can see Knotts, Magic Mtn & California adventure all in your 4 day period.

email me for some coupons to Mgc Mtn. I will look for Knotts coupons as well.

Ok. Magic Mountain is your best bet for rides. also look for a hotel close to magic mountain , then you can go to Universal studios. and to Disneyland on the 3rd day rest on the fourth day :} Do some sight seeing. The hotels around Magic Mountain are pretty nice. And you can get on the 5 fwy it will take you right to all the attractions. The beach would be 5 north to the 126west . less than an hour away. Maybe on the fourth day you could go to ventura the beaches are nice there.
Have a safe trip. Pete H.

Most of the rides in Magic Mountain is daring and scary. No pun intended but I haven't seen (yet) any Grandparents riding on Batman or Superman ride.
If you want to do the rides as family, then I strongly suggest Knotts Berry Farm. If you are just going to escort your grand daughters and not really interested riding in roller coasters then I suggest go to Magic Mountain.

Both Magic Mountain and Knotts Berry Farm offer water rides. Both of these theme parks offer scary rides although Magic Mountain has more daring roller coasters.

The advantage of choosing Knotts Berry Farm is the location. Knotts Berry Farm being so close from Disneyland will give you variety of choices of hotels/motels and restaraunts. At night if you opt to drive (I am assuming you are renting a car), Downtown Disney is ten to 15 minutes drive from Knotts Berry Farm. Kids love Downtown Disney.

Magic Mountain has few choices of motels and restaurants. Unless you are familiar with Valencia City(location of Magic Mountain) the only restaurants close to Magic Mountain is Hamburger Habit and Red Lobster.

Room rates will depend on dates of travel, Feb 14 is Valentines Day and Feb 21 is Presidents Day holiday.

Hampton Inn Suites in Buena Park is close to Knotts with shuttle, Embassy suites is nearby (more $$) and Super 8 has family suites (less $$$).

There is a Comfort Suites not too far from Magic Mountain.

Yes, Magic Mountain definitely offers more of the thrilling rides. However, Knott's location would probably be better as it is in Orange County, which also boasts of Disneyland and other touristy and kid friendly sites. And right across from Knott's is Soak City, for the aquatic lover in you.

Good luck and enjoy!

WOW! Thanks for all the input from everybody....really impressed as I am new to this site. We took our grand daughters to Disneyland, California land last Nov. and they and grandpa went on all the faast rides. On the other hand, I need my seabands on! Keep in mind we will choose Magic Mtn.. or Knotts and will definitely go to Universal Studios (unless you are neg. about it). We are young grandparentsm, 58, and love taking the girls on trips to your wonderful country. (from Canada)

One other thing to keep in mind:

Magic Mountain is usually only open on weekends (and holidays) during the winter, so that might affect your itinerary.

I have to agree with a lot of the previous responses that Magic Mountain is the better of the two parks in terms of wild/wet rides. However, keep in mind that if you compare the two communities that surround the parks, Knott's and Buena Park offer other attractions that might be of interest. There are a number of dinner theatres that cater to the entire family (Wild Bill's and Medieval Times) and Movieland's Wax Museum. Also in the area is a number of other good restaurants as well as a shopping mall and movie theatre complex. Plenty of reasonably priced hotels in the area too. I guess i'm thinking more out of the box when it comes to finding other things to do if/when your party has had their fill of the park rides for the day.

I live right down the street from Magic Mountain :)

Personally....I'd choose Knotts, but I hate roller coasters :) If your Granddaughters are into roller coasters though, Magic Mountain wins though. Universal is only about a half hour away from here.

Now a days, you'll find a ton of hotels and motels within a short drive to Magic Mountain. If cost isn't an issue, I would stay at the Hyatt. It's right now the street from Magic Mountain (about a mile) and right at the (very nice) mall, movie theater, tons of places to eat (Olive Garden, BJs, Black Angus, Souplantation, Johnny Rockets, Island Burgers, TONS of places). There's also a movie theater there (with IMAX) and Target, Kohls. Tons of shopping. -- The other direction, about 2-3 miles away you'll find most of the hotels. I know there is a Comfort Suites, Residence Inn, and other hotels. There's also tons of shopping there (Walmart, Old Navy, Circuit City, ect) and lots of places to eat (Chilis, Claim Jumper, Woodcreek Grill, Macaroni Grill...Plus In and Out and all the fast food places).

Joe is right, Knotts has better variety, better managed, and I think more faily oriented. Magic Mountain attacts more teenagers and those who just want to go nuts. The food is ok, but pricey. Knotts has wonderful gift shops and great restaurants. Also Magic Mountain is in Valencia, and in the Summer it's extremely hot. Unbearable.
