we will be visiting both hangzhou and suzhou. are we better off returning to shanghai to catch a train to xian or should be go from suzhou to nanjing, see the city and then take a train to xian? thank you

yes...going direct from nanjing to xi'an.
get to Beijing direct from Suzhou and from there head to Xi'an, if you want to see the capital.
