| Madeira Island | Madeira in December? Too cold..? Posted: Wed November 24, 2004 09:42 AM UTC
Hi! Me and my friend would like to visit madeira in December. Would it be too cold then? Is it possible to swim in the ocean? Is there much to see during this period or we`d better postpone the trip till the spring?

Postpone until spring, it is warmer and the flowers will be in bloom. It can be quite cold this time of the year, and it can even snow!

I was once in Madeira for Christmas and it wasn't so cold... no snow.. i think snow happened once in last 30 years.
But the weather in December will be about 14-20ºc no good for swimming i think. Spring will be better about 16ºc to 22ºc. The big difference is on rain December is more probably to rain. But again I’ve to say that Madeira is very beautiful in Christmas season, really beautiful. I wouldn’t know witch date to choose. http://www.weather.com/activities/travel/businesst See this site for weather averages

It's never cold in Madeira!! Some nights during winter you maybe need a light jacket...
It can snow? yes in the mountains... but it also snows in the Kilimanjaro... I've been swimming at sea in Madeira in January 2003 however probably some days won't be so good. The thing is that the New Years Eve in Funchal is absolutely amazing... If you go on spring of course it should be better :) It's up to you Cheers
