Travel from Tulum to Chichen Itza?
Posted: Tue November 23, 2004 01:08 AM UTC
Hello all,
Wondering how difficult it is to get from Tulum to Chichen Itza - we don't want to rent a car, but weren't sure how difficult it is to catch a bus to the ruins.
We were also thinking about going to Coba -- but have the same question. Is there bus service to both of these places from Tulum, or will we have to go up to Playa Del Carmen for a bus?
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks!

Buses are both fast and cheap, and they go from Tulum so it's no problem getting to either of the sites... :)

Ya...buses run all the time. So you should have no problem. To get to Coba...maybe a bit more difficult. But to Chicha and Tulum would be easy.

When I was there three weeks ago there were many buses going from Tulum to Chichén Itzá, via Cobá and Valladolid. I'm not sure if the first-class bus stops at the site, but it stops at Valladolid so you can change to another bus there if you have to. There are buses every half an hour or so from Valladolid to Chichén Itzá. However, all second-class and other buses going from Tulum stops at the site.

The road wasn't the best I've seen, but very good for mexican standards... ;) It was asphalted and bumpy. A little while after Cobá we got out on a highway and from there the roads were pretty good.

We talked to a lot of people in Tulum and they all said the place had changed quite much the recent years. But I still found it to be a small, charming and rustic place. Lots of cabañas on the beach south of the ruins. The cheapest were still 10 USD and the most expencive were big luxurious cabañas for hundreds of dollars. I didn't stay there though, maybe next time... ;)

If you go to Chichen Itza or Ek Balam (much better in my opinion), make sure you spend some time in Vallodolid. It's a lovely town - more like the real Mexico. It's a colonial town, very nice to wander around, have something to eat, visit the cathedral and churches. It's about 1/2 hour before arriving at Chichen Itza.

Wow...thanks to all who responded -- I feel much better about not renting a car now...if the buses are so easy, we'll just travel that way. Also, thanks for the tip on Valladolid -- it will be nice to check out the local culture and a real town.
