Guayaquil Concerns about Guayaquil
Posted: Sat November 20, 2004 11:58 PM UTC
Hi Everyone,
My name is Felicia and I am a current college student. I decided to spend next semester (Jan- April) on a abroad program in Guayaquil! I am very excited about my trip, but have been a getting a little nervous now that it is getting closer to my departue. I heard that the weather is not to good around the time I will be going and I also heard mixed reviews on what the environment (people, city) is like there. PLEASE help! Any advise will be great! Thanks soo much.

Ok this is second hand info. My sister lived there for a couple years. She told me that it is a nice place . But It is not the cleanist place. the natives use the river for washing and bathing and other stuff. You can get a nice place to stay while there. also you can go to the Galipagos islands. It is just to the west of there. My sister drank only bottled water while there. the roads are not the best but if you need to try and get a 4x4. I hope your visit is a safe one. PS where are you going from. what country? do you spaek spanish? I hope to hear from you have a safe trip. Pete H.

Guayaquil is a big city.
The east side of the river is relatively undeveloped, but the west side has skyscrapers, parks and colorful neighborhoods.
For Ecuador, the crime rate is high, but overall it is a safe country.
I wouldn't worry too much.
I'll be in Ecuador from December to March. I've been to Guyaquil once before, but you'll likely be an expert on the city by the time I pass through there again in February.

No worries,
I have been there three times with no issues.
If you stay in the right areas and are with plenty of people you will be ok.
Make sure that you have somebody with you always at night.
Never carry any valuables.
Ahhh, ask the taxi driver first how much he is going to charge you.
It is a great city and enjoy.

I lived in Ecuador for 19 years and I did think that Guayaquil was not the best or cleaenst place. But today, 2004, you don't see those things anymore, i was just there three weeks ago and I was very impressed of how clean, modern, and nice Guayaquil looks.

Where are you going to be staying? what university are you attending?, you may email me for any pointers if you wish. Please feel free ms@uprm..edu

The weather is very nice, but you arrive when the weather at Guayaquil be change, now is a little hot and humedity... like 28 centigrades. At January is the beach season, all students have vacation and the beaches like Salinas have a impresive nigth action.
Guayaquil is a modern city, clean, and the people is very nice (like me...hahahha).
