I have limited vacation time and am trying to decide if I should go to Kenya or Tanzania. My goals are to trek and see animals. I'm wondering if one of these treks outshines the other.

we didnt trek up mount Kenya but certainlny drove up there... we saw many birds and completely different vegetation to that on the plains, had the good fortune to see bush pig....elephant are there but the bush was so dense we didnt see any...

It's WET up there almost all year...be prepared for mud and cloud mist... birds are fantastic..

If you are planning to stay at Mount Kenya lodge, be aware that they have a posh dress code... shoes and smart stuff for dinner please... its a bit like an old peoples retirement home, very quiet and elegant. The rooms are stone built and have fires as it gets cold in the evenings... see my mt kenya page

Sorry cant help on Kilimanjaro...

I strongly suggest you go to Kenya for your trip. Safaris and hotels are alot cheaper and people in Kenya are nicer and speak alot better english. I have climbed both Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya and have recently climbed Ol Donyo Lengai( the mountain which Angelina Jolie climbs at the end of Tomb raider and the Craddle of life movie). Mt kilimanjaro is great but expensive. Mt Kenya is alot better with more scenery and animals. I saw more animals on mount kenya then i did on Kilimanjaro. I climbed Kilimanjaro in Febuary 2004 and mount Kenya in June 2004. If you choose mt Kenya, I strongly suggest Chogoria Route, it has the best scenery on the way up. You can also book a Kilimanjaro climb from kenya and there is a reliable Shuttle service from Nairobi to Arusha tanzania which costs less than 20$.

Hello there, just have returned from Afrika,Kenya with my wife and two daughters. Our dream came true after our care was well treated by Mountsafaris adventure www.mountsafaris.com
We got them through our family friend who had just visited kenya an year before.
Hiking was great for both mountain(Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro)Our guide was well informed about the mountain, flora and fauna which we came across.
Mount Kenya was beautiful with the valcanic rocks, moraines, crater lakes and the summit lenana.
Kilimanjaro was also great and we had good time with our guide. The food was amazing and we forgotten the cold wether on both mountain.
We were treated like kings and queens. The poters werer great and every evening we had nice songs of Kenya´´ Jambo hakuna matata´´which mean no problem in Kenya.
Jeremiah our guide made our trip quite interesting .
The price was great and they deserve our 100 percent reccomendation.
Well give them a trial.
