I have just won a fantastic 5 day trip to Rio, stopping at Le Meridien on Copacabana Beach WOW !!! Our trip includes a visit to Sugar Loaf, and to the Maracana Stadium ( not sure how thrilled I am about that ! - but hubby is very keen ! ) Please let me know the sights that I shouldn't miss -I am lucky enough to have won spending money as well so we want to do Rio BIG style. Any ideas on souveniers to bring back would also be very welcome. Many thanks

Souvenirs: semi-precious stones, stone ashtrays, Amerindian artefacts, a bottle of cachaca (to make the caipirinhas which you'll have enjoyed). And stylish, good-quality cotton clothing is very inexpensive. Buy a bikini (at Bumbum Ipanema) if you dare!

Try to get to the feira hippie (hippie Fair) in Ipanema on Sundays. It's a great place to get gifts for friends/family at home. Clothes shopping is better in Ipamena then in Copacabana. I'd check out the main drage in Ipanema for some very cool fashion. (Rio Sul for more serious shoppers). You should also take a walk around the base of sugar loaf after your visit there. It's there that you can see little monkies up close and sit on a bench watching the water with your man (it's very romantic). I don't recommend this activity at night. Leave when dusk is coming in. Oh, and you will enjoy Maracana. It's amazing! Are you guys going to see a game? Seriously, watching one game there can turn anyone into a soccer fan (even me!) Have fun! (We all know you will!)

Thanks for all the advice, I really can't wait to get out there. I forgot to mention that I'm a vegetarian, any idea what there will be for me to eat? Abrigado :o)

Awesome! How lucky you are, and everyone has given really great tips...but save time for the beach. The night life in Centro, the old neighborhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa, if not a veggan, then don't miss the churassco at Porcao. Your time is short, but a 1 1/2 day trip to Cabo Frio, Buzios, or the mountains would be nice as well.

lucky you. i hope. hope this is not one of those all inclusive things that do not include tips of 100 dollars a day for resort employees automatically addded to your hotel bill. be sure and ready the fine print.
look here for links to information on that location ( www.towd.com ) and if you will not be going for several weeks order all the free booklets you can.
if this will not work for you they probably can print out a good deal of information.
