Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern clusters of blinking lights
Posted: Fri November 19, 2004 10:13 AM UTC
A couple of weeks ago, I returned to Sweden with the night train from Berlin via Sassnitz. On the way to the ferry, I saw several clusters of what looked like radio masts or similar, blinking in sequences with a red light.

Since it was a November night, it was impossible to see if it was indeed masts, or if it was chimneys, but I never saw any smoke (although it looked like some power station thing as far as lights go). There were LOADS of these things and all blinking in a sequence which gave a very spooky effect when seen from a train.

The train was too fast for me to see what every little village was called, but the first of these (I saw a couple) was just north of Neubrandenburg.

What did I see??? :)))

Could they have been wind-farm turbines?

If the lights weren't actually blinking (although I suspect they would be anyway), it could've been the blades passing them by.

There are loads of them, e.g.

Modern ones have rotor diameters of 80m. The newest one has 127m rotor diameter.

Aha!

Sure, I know there are loads of wind farms in Germany (and in Scandinavia for that matter) but I have never seen them in that huge a cluster in the dark. The ones I see from the bridge in Copenhagen never blink like that all the time. This was really as if the aliens had landed :)))

That's what it must have been though - mystery solved :)

Hi
I used live just north of Neubrandenburg, in the seaside town of Ueckermuende. It could have been a few things. There is a large military base in the woods near Torgelow, so it could be related to that. Alternatively, could you have seen lighthouses? I know there are a fair few along the coast, as well as lighted buoys. There are also quite a few wind turbines in that part of the country.
