| Arctic | independent travel in kamchatka ...? Posted: Thu November 18, 2004 03:05 AM UTC
Hi guys,
My husband and I stumbled upon an article on Kamchatka a few months ago and swore that we had to visit. Our dream trip would be to take 4-6 weeks to float down a river there, but all sources seem to indicate that independent travel is near impossible (for a wide variety of reasons). My question is, have any of you explored Kamchatka on your own or with a single guide? If possible, we'd like to do this trip without the aid of a tour agency. Thanks for any help you can give .. I am located in the Aleutian Islands which at one time was owned by Russia. I don't know if you have checked out Amaknak Island or Unalaska, but there is a Russian Orthodox Chapel located here and there are some awesome sights to see, you can kayak, hike, etc., camp and you wouldn't have to have a tour guide, we are approximately 800 miles from Kamchatka.
It is a beautiful region!

Hi, I did it with single guide, without any guide, etc. To explore Kamchatka on your own you need good maps, GPS and way-points lists. I dare to give advice that to hire a local guide wouldn't be bad idea.
Some Kamchatka trekking maps for free: www.geocities.com/ainsanov/Kamchatka_Maps Among Kamchatka trekking guides the most well-known one for me is: Mrs. Valentina Zhukovskaya (www.geocities.com/kamchatka_photos) her E-mail:ili@mail.ru For some references try to get in touch with Andrew Fraser: http://www.kaktus-outdoor.ch/news/news.asp?lang=9&newsID=3 his E-mail is given there.
