Malaria:- sure these questions have been asked before Sorry Posted: Wed November 17, 2004 04:54 PM UTC
When we travel to the Djuma camp in the Sabi region, i am presuming we will need to take Malaria tablets.
What level of risk is thier?
Do you have any recommendations as to what brands are good, and do not have too many side effects, What side effects can we expect?
Any other information will be greatly appreciated on this subject
Many thanks
Tanya

Side effects This year I have take malaria tablets in 2 occasions for different travels ... 2 months of tablets each time ... I only get some stomach problems when I had them before breakfast with no food in my stomach. I didn't saw mosquitos at Namibia, perhaps it would have been ok without the malaria tablets, but I feel better knowing that I have prevented any trouble.
Have a nice time, and if the doctor tells you to have the tablets do not doubt it

Tanya, you are travelling in September next year, right? For September, our family would not take any anti-malaria medication for the Sabi Sands area (not to be confused with Sabie, which has no malaria). But we will try not to bitten by mosquitoes, and we will be vigilant for flu-like symptoms.

I wouldn't bother with taking anti-malaria pills if you are travelling to Kruger during the dry season (July-Oct) I would cover up between dusk and dawn though and use bug spray.
If you go during the wet season take the pills. Check with the CDC to get the best info.

By the way, Sabi Sands is a private game reserve on the western boarder of Kruger.

Sabie vs Sabi Sands Posted: Thu November 18, 2004 05:13 AM UTC
There is a town called Sabie, which is more than 60km from the reserve area called Sabi Sands. Sabie is pronounced the same as Sabi, and if you ask the locals to point you to Sabi, they will send you to Sabie. Sabie is at a higher altitude up on the escarpment, and therefore free of malaria throughout the year.
Djuma is indeed in Sabi Sands, which borders directly onto the Kruger National Park with no fences in between. Sabi Sands is privately owned land, with their own systems of environment and tourist management in a different style to what is done in the "public" land of KNP.

The above websites all mention doxycycline, which is actually quite a common antibiotic in the tetracyclines family. What is seldom mentioned though, is that this antibiotic reduces the efficiency of oral contraceptives.

As an antibiotic, they are normally taken for only around 3-5 days, but as an anti-malarial they are often taken for a much longer period of time.
My one little nephew was nearly named Doxy......

hi
We just used Mefliam when travelling to Mozambique. You only take it once a week and nobody in my family complained about side-effects.
I assume it will be suitable for KNP. Must be the same mosquitos travelling around.
Another option is a type of insect repellent that you wash your clothes in. I can't remember the name but when we travelled to KNP in 1995 we used it for the babies clothes. They were to young to take malaria tablets.
Maybe somebody knows if you can still find it and what the name is.
