In mid February, 2005 I would like to travel overland between Calama & Salta, or Salta to Calama. How is that done? bus, guided tour, etc?

There is a direct bus from San Pedro de Atacama (or Calama) to Salta. Guided tours prove efficient around San Pedro de Atacama, though it's also a good idea to trip on your own in this area...

Buses Geminis (and Atacama 2000, through a code-sharing agreement) go daily and directly from Calama to Salta (they leave at 7 PM), passing through San Pedro; it may be possible to take the bus there instead of Calama, but check in advance.
Ticket is US$ 12. Daniel
