With the new highway soon (or just) completed, it should be lot easier going their by long distance bus. Both your Shanghai or Hangzhou hotel can arrange a multi-day trip to Huangshan. I highly recommend you to take a trip there, reason, see photos: http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/18aef/f0686/

When you visit Huangshan, spend 2 days in the mountain (stay over night at one of the hotels top of the mountains). If you are so interested, you can climb up from either back or the front of the mountain, stay over night, then take the other path down, otherwise take cable way to save time and effort. Wear very comfortable shoes, hiking can be straneous to some people, be prepared to hike thousands of steps (yes, either stone steps or cement ones) in a day.

If you have time, also visit Tun Xi old street, and Xi Di or Hong Cun, relatively well preserved villages with some Ming/Qing dynasty architecture.

Have a great time.

Suelyon, I do not know the bus between Hangzhou/Shanghai and Tunxi. I also assume there are more than one 'companies' running the long distance route, so things could vary.

The bus we took from Chongqing to Chengdu had a toilet, and the bus went straight for 4.5 hours w/o any stop.

we have booked in pingyao for 2 nights. i'm beginning to think that huangshan will be too difficult. i don't think we will have time for both special trips. i hope i am right that in december at least if we have to choose, pinyao will win. any thoughts?

well i havent been to pingyao, but i can vouch for how magical huangshan is (i was there on christmas day 2 years back and it had just snowed the night b4!!) you can spend a few days just visiting the surrounding regions as well (revisit scenes where crouching tiger hidden dragon was shot). we regretted not staying up on the mountain, that's part of the problem when dealing with local hotel owners...they tend to give u false information for their own benefit. hope u enjoy your trip

If you go in December, while Huangshan will still be beautiful (all seasons!), it is not easy to hike. Pin Yao would be better perhaps. It could snow in Ping Yao in December as well.
