| Amalfi | Amalfi or Positano Posted: Fri November 12, 2004 01:56 PM UTC
Hi, old topic perhaps but I would appreciate some opinions.
I have booked 4 days in Amalfi (Miramalfi) next summer for my family (including 2 teenage kids) but am now wondering if Positano would be a better bet. Our reasoning for Amalfi was that we found an affordable hotel which had a pool which seems less likely in Positano but if it is so much better perhaps we should forget the pool and move Any comments whcih might help clear my confusion? Thanks |

Depends on what you want to do. Personally, I stayed at Positano for three nights but would have no qualms staying at Amalfi after seeing the coast.
Amalfi has more attractions, Positano is more picturesque. If you're going for beaches, don't get excited. Then again, that's an area I'm spoilt in. I liked Amalfi for some of the history it has (don't miss the paper museum, really interesting) and the fact that Ravello is immediately above you (less than an hour's walk and scenically stunning). Wherever you stay on the Amalfi coast I suspect you'll enjoy it but, personally, if you've made the booking, I'd recommend you stay there. Cheers, Ian

Hi
I actually think amalfi is better. Positano is nice to visit but its very squashed in with lots of tourists. i spent 8 days walking in the amalfi sorrento region last year. i found the book..Landscapes of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast (Landscape Countryside Guides) by Julian Tippett very good.I got it cheap on amazon. There is a walk between 2 villages..I think Amalfi and the next through streets and houses..its very easy and comes out in a lovely piazza (icecream!) and there is a little calm beach there.Your children may like to ride the ferries also. The long distance busses along the coast may be a bit much! the walks are quite steep but behind amalfi you walk up the mian street with the sea at your back then take the steps on the right..you go up there is an old paper mill there with a peaceful river... Buon viaggio.

Thanks Ian - not 100% what we will be doing. Had thought of a boat trip perhaps to Capri (is that worth it or just a trap?), trip to Pompeii. but other than that just enjoying the two towns and relaxing.
Any suggestions?

Thanks! Maybe we will just stay put in Amalfi as you both suggest - were planning on a ferry ride to Positano anyway so maybe that will be enough.

You will have no trouble spending four days at Amalfi and definitely include Pompeii or one of the many other old Roman sites (such as Herclaneum) in the area that get less press but will also be less crowded.
I didn't go to Capri, but, depending on when you go, it can get very crowded (i.e. summer) and it can be a trap but, the allure remains. Cheers.

We're thinking of the Pompeii by night trip which looks spectacular and am debating the Capri trip since it takes the better part of a day. Anyway - all looks good so thanks for all the input
Ciao!
