| Cefalonia Island | Captain Corelli's Island Posted: Thu November 11, 2004 12:04 PM UTC
Have you been to Kefalonia? Have you been there on holiday? Two enthusiastic university researchers would like to hear your experiences. This is an exciting project on the island's representation in the book and film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". For more information please contact: Penny Travlou (p.travlou@eca.ac.uk)

I was there in the early 1990s. Spent two weeks. Not sure if this qualifies...

I was there also many years ago, and I have very good memories from Kefalonia. If you think I can help, please mail me.

I was in Kefalonia for vacation in July 1975. Arriving by ship from Kerkyra, only spend a couple of days there before moving on to Ithaki. But those were unforgettable! I stayed in a modest but spacious groundfloor room in a house on the beach of Assos, in front of the hill with the mediaval castle. Met two brothers-seamen from Assos who were spending their vacation in their home town (actually village). Went octopus fishing with them, went with a small motorboat in caves and swam at isolated beaches at the bottoms of steep cliffs. In the evening their families and friends set up a long table in the street along the waterfront in the bay and we had long, joyfull nights eating, drinking and laughing well, English and Greek all mixed up.
(You must know that at that time there were no hotels nor restaurants in Assos). It was really great!

Yes, we went to Kefalonia last summer (2006) on the Corelli trail. We found the site where Pelagia's house was built, the site of the Italian encampment, the threshing floor where the dancing took place, the ruins where the partisans had their hideaway, the house where Dr Yiannis removed the pea from the ear, and the jetty (or what remains of it) where Mandras threw Pelagia into the sea, the place where the village was built and the pathway down which is shown at the end of the film. We have many photographs of our experiences - a few are on my travel page.
