What to do in Richmond?
Posted: Thu November 11, 2004 05:40 AM UTC
I will be going to Richmond for a day in November. What are some of the best activities to do here. Also, what is a good inexpensive place to eat. I like most types of foods, I do not eat shellfish or fish.

If you are interested in the Civil War

Richmond is a dream. Visit the Museum of the Confederacy, the Confederate White House, and Saint John's Church. Drive around to the various battle sites. These combined activities will take up a full day.

If not interested in the Civil War, I can then recommend the Valentine History Museum, the Virginia Museum of Art, and Hollywood Cemetery.

Can't recommend any restaurants; I tried to find a place with authentic Virginia cooking wihout success.

Good eats on Richmond are definately...
Bottoms Up Pizza... The old one was washed out by the flood this summer/fall but there is a new one off of Nuckols Road.
The Village Cafe... Grace and Harrison the best chicken salad ever!
3rd St diner: good late nite eats...
the best arbys ever is on broad at libbie.
Other than that I cant tell you too much because i dont know where you will be in richmond, its a big town!!!

Thank you guys for your suggestions. I'll be sure to try a few when I go there. I am not sure, but I was told we may be staying at the Marriot if that is any help.

Richmond is kind of weak in terms of nightlife, but it is rich with historical sites in the immediate downtown area alone. When I show out-of-towners around, I start with the Museum and White House of the Confederacy, then I take them to the Capitol Square, next it is the cobblestoned streets of Shockoe Slip, then it's Monument Avenue with all the major figures of the Confederacy plus the incongruent statue of Arthur Ashe, then it is off to the Hotel Jefferson- not to book a room, but to admire the architecture and the ambience. As to food, Richmond offers restaurants which represent a number of different cuisines. My suggestion is, if you can swing it, not to confine yourself to downtown, but to go into the West End where three of my favourites are located: Manila Manila, Ipanema Grill, and Zorba's Greek Restaurant. Find out the address of your hotel and chart point to point directions from there on mapquest. I hope I have been of some small help.

I question if it is or is not weak in nightlife. Consider the source. This opinion comes from somebody who chooses not to go out. B1bob is the last person to consult for nightlife.
