| Arctic | Alaskan hiking 2005 Posted: Wed November 10, 2004 06:22 PM UTC
I am traveling with my brother and sister to Alaska in summer of 2005. We are all in our mid-twenties, very athletic, and all in shape. We have had a great time hiking in all conditions all around the nearby White Mountains of New Hampshire. I know that there are so many opportunities for hiking and other outdoor activities in Alaska, but where is a good place to begin looking? How do i narrow my choices? I am getting the impression that renting a car would be the cheapest and also perhaps most rewarding(driving along alaskan highways does not sound very boring) for a small group...also, if we are on a limited budget, how expensive do B&B's during the summer months? Any guidance or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

You wont be disappointed, Alaska is tremendous. But bring more money than you think you should--it seems to be about 30-50% more expensive than the lower 48.
Examples: breakfast seems to run at least $10, run of the mill motel/hotel rooms are difficult to find under $200 per night. Gas is 70 to 80 cents more per gallon.

It depends on where in Alaska you are coming to. It's a bigger state then most people realize. If you are coming to the Interior, Fairbanks, there are a lot of overnight places that aren't too expensive. If you are going down by Anchorage, you can stay in a backpackers hostel. You could also join an Alaskan email list such as Alaska_Living or out_and_about_alaska @ yahoogroups.com. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/out_and_about_alaska/
Make friends and stay with them. Alaska is an awsome place to hike and backpack.

Have you gone yet? If not, when are you going? If so, where did you go?
